DAFO FA vs. DAFO 3: Which is best for dorsiflexion block in smaller patients?

September 13, 2016

When a smaller patient needs a brace that will block both plantarflexion and dorsiflexion, the DAFO FA (Fixed Ankle) is an excellent style choice.

Many practitioners choose the DAFO 3 instead, adding an anterior strap. But the DAFO 3 is designed to allow the tibia to move freely through the anterior opening, blocking plantarflexion and allowing free dorsiflexion. Because it’s contrary to the functional purpose of this brace, adding an anterior strap with the intent of controlling excess dorsiflexion can cause the plastic at the instep area to bend and crack.

The DAFO FA is a better alternative for the smaller crouching patient. Similar in design to the DAFO 3, the DAFO FA includes a higher instep trimline and an anterior strap to block dorsiflexion. This brace is designed to withstand the added pressure of excess dorsiflexion.

We’ve recently reduced the price of the DAFO FA, bringing it in line with the DAFO 3. We hope this will encourage our customers to choose the DAFO FA when looking for a brace to effectively block both plantarflexion and dorsiflexion.
